General Public - All The Rage (1984)

After the 1983 break-up of The Beat (known as The English Beat in North America), Wakeling and Roger decided to continue working together in a new venture. They joined up with keyboardist Mickey Billingham (ex-Dexys Midnight Runners), guitarist Mick Jones of The Clash, bassist Horace Panter (The Specials) and drummer Stoker (ex-Dexys Midnight Runners/The Bureau) to form a quasi-"supergroup" of the UK punk/ska/mod scene. The band was dubbed General Public, and was signed to Virgin Records in the UK and I.R.S. Records in North America.

The band recorded and released the album All the Rage in 1984. Jones left General Public part way through the recording process, but is listed in the album's inner sleeve credits as a group member (although he did not appear in any of the band photographs). Jones' replacement, guitarist Kevin White also played on the album, and was also listed an official group member. White's picture also appeared on the album's back cover.

In the UK, General Public had a minor hit with the eponymous track called "General Public", which reached # 60 in the UK Singles Chart in 1984. As well, the B-side "Dishwasher" (an instrumental mix of "Burning Bright" from All The Rage) became a surprise top 40 in the Netherlands, after its use as a theme tune to the then popular pop radio show Avondspits.

Later in the year, the band fared even better in North America, where their second single "Tenderness" was a Top 40 hit in Canada (#11), and the U.S. (#27). It was also featured in the movies Weird Science, Clueless, and Sixteen Candles.

For the follow-up album, White and Stoker were replaced by brothers Gianni and Mario Minardi on guitar and drums, respectively. Hand to Mouth was significantly less successful than their debut album, and the band split up.

Their song "Taking The Day Off" was featured in the 1986 comedy film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, by film director John Hughes.

Roger and Wakeling worked on various solo projects for the next few years, before reuniting as General Public in 1994 to perform a cover version of The Staple Singers hit , "I'll Take You There" for the Threesome film soundtrack. The song was a Top 40 hit in the U.S. and Canada, and a minor hit in the UK (#73).

The duo (now the only members of General Public) stayed together to release the album Rub It Better in 1995, recorded with the aid of record producer Jerry Harrison. Sales were poor, and Roger was tired of travelling to America, and they soon broke up again.

Since 2004, Dave Wakeling has toured the U.S. as The English Beat, and he often performs General Public tracks in his set list with a full backing band

The Three O'Clock - Vermillion (1988)

It's said that Prince signed the Three O'Clock to his Paisley Park label after they were dropped by IRS having never heard a note of their music but knowing that they were friends of the Bangles, for whom he had previously written "Manic Monday." It seems like the Three O'Clock's paisley underground pop would have been a perfect fit for Prince's suitably-named label, especially since Around the World in a Day had shown that the two camps shared several influences, but for some reason, 1988's Vermillion completely drops the group's previous association with psychedelia, leaving them a mediocre, slightly bubblegummy pop band. There are a couple of good songs here, especially Michael Quercio's gentle ballad "Through the Sleepy Town" and Jason Falkner's "Love Has No Heart," but they're overshadowed by inoffensive at best, painful at worst trifles like "Love Explosion" and "World on Fire." Ian Ritchie's production is horrible, over-synthesized, and sequenced to within an inch of its life, but the nadir is Prince's contribution, the gimmicky "Neon Telephone," which sounds like it took less time to write than it does to listen to. Voice Of The Beehive - Let It Bee (1988)

Let It Bee is the debut album from alternative rock band Voice of the Beehive. Released in 1988 on London Records, the album earned positive reviews from music crititcs and was a success on U.S. college radio stations. In the UK, the album reached #13 on the album chart in its debut week ending 2 July 1988. The group had their first hit single in the UK with "Don't Call Me Baby", which reached #15 and earned them their first Top 20 placing.

Several singles were issued both before and after the release of the album. Let It Bee contained two bonus tracks on the U.S. edition (they were not listed on the CD cover, but were listed within the text on the CD).

Voice of the Beehive are an Anglo-American college rock/alternative band, formed in London in 1986 by Californian sisters Tracey Bryn and Melissa Brooke Belland, daughters of The Four Preps singer, Bruce Belland.

Voice of the Beehive were formed in 1986 by the Californian sisters Tracey Belland (vocals/guitar) and Melissa Belland (vocals) with UK band members Martin Brett (bass guitar), Woody Woodgate (drums) and Mike Jones (guitar). The band's initial success came in the UK, U.S. and Australia. The band had five Top 40 singles from two albums in the UK.

Their biggest commercial success came with the singles, "Don't Call Me Baby", "Monsters and Angels", "I Think I Love You", "I Walk The Earth" and "I Say Nothing" from their first two albums Let It Bee and Honey Lingers. In 1995 the band released a third album Sex & Misery. The band reformed in 2003 to play a two week UK tour averaging 5000 seaters per night. Tracey Belland is a teacher in Laguna Beach, California. Melissa Belland runs her own company "Made In Heaven" also in Laguna Beach, California. Martin Brett runs Brett Dempsey Music Productions in London and is a member of two bands I, Ludicrous and Dollshouse. He also trained to become a facial hair specialist for Film, Theatre & TV in 2010. Woody Woodgate still plays drums in Madness. Mike Jones lives in Norwich and still plays guitar.

Boingo Alive is a double album by Oingo Boingo (also known as The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo). It serves a number of purposes, being a hybrid of a best-of album, studio album and live album. It was recorded to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the band and contained a selection of the band's classics re-recorded live on a soundstage without an audience. (itunes)

Oingo Boingo was an American new wave band. They are best known for their influence on other musicians, their soundtrack contributions and their high energy Halloween concerts. The band was founded in 1972 as a performance art group called The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, and from 1976 it was led by songwriter/vocalist Danny Elfman, who has since achieved substantial renown as a composer for film and television.

The group's format changed twice. In 1979, it changed from a semi-theatrical music and comedy troupe into a ska-influenced New Wave octet and shortened their name to Oingo Boingo. In 1994, the band reshuffled its lineup, adopted an alternative rock sound and further shortened the group's name to Boingo. The band retired after a farewell concert on Halloween 1995, having reverted to the name Oingo Boingo for the concert. (wiki)

Early years

The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, formed in late 1972 by Richard Elfman, was a musical theater troupe in the tradition of Spike Jones and Frank Zappa, performing an eclectic repertoire ranging from Cab Calloway covers to instrumentals in the style of Balinese gamelan and Russian ballet music. The name was inspired by a fictional secret society on the Amos 'n' Andy TV series called The Mystic Knights of the Sea. Most of the members performed in whiteface and clown makeup, and a typical show contained music ranging from the 1890s to the 1950s, in addition to original material. This version of the band employed as many as 15 musicians at any given time, playing over 30 instruments, including some instruments built by band members. Few recordings from this period exist, although they released a novelty record about kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst, "You've Got Your Baby Back".

Violent Femmes (1982)

Violent Femmes were an American alternative rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, initially active between 1980 and 1987 and again from 1988 to 2009. The band performed as a trio, including: singer, guitarist and songwriter Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and two drummers, Victor DeLorenzo (1980–1993 and 2002–2009) and Guy Hoffman (1993–2002).

The Violent Femmes released eight studio albums and fifteen singles during the course of their career. The band found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1982. Featuring many of their well-known songs, including "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up" and "Gone Daddy Gone", Violent Femmes became the band's biggest-selling album and eventually went platinum by the RIAA. The Violent Femmes went on to become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s, selling over 9 million albums by 2005. After the release of their third album The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), the band's future was uncertain and they split up in 1987, when Gano and Ritchie went solo. However, they regrouped a year later, releasing the album 3 (1989). Since then, The Violent Femmes' popularity continued to grow on, especially in the United States where the songs "Nightmares" and "American Music" cracked the top five on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Violent Femmes is the debut album by Violent Femmes, released on November 30, 1982, and again one year later (with two extra tracks "Ugly" and "Gimme the Car").The album went platinum nine years after it was released.

In 2002, Rhino Records remastered the album, filled out the disc's length with demos, and added another disc of live tracks and a radio interview for a 20th anniversary special edition, with liner notes by Michael Azerrad. Most of the songs on the album were written when the songwriter, Gordon Gano, was still in high school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Violent Femmes peaked at #171 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart.

Translator - Translator (1985)

Translator is the self-titled third album from Translator, released in 1985 on 415 Records and distributed by Columbia Records.

In 2007, the album was released on Compact Disc for the first time by Wounded Bird Records. The CD release included two songs from a single as bonus tracks.

Translator is a San Francisco rock band that had success during the 1980s. They created a sound that spanned updated British Merseybeat and stripped-down punk-like rock to psychedelia. Inspired by the Beatles and 1960s California folk-rock bands such as The Byrds, their guitar-based music was very popular during the early 1980s on non-commercial campus radio and new wave music stations. But unlike similar groups including R.E.M., Translator did not get much exposure on mainstream classic rock radio. The group's stripped-down music and sometimes ironic and disturbing existentialist lyrics also helped to make them a significant influence on the alternative rock of the 1990s.

Moonpools & Caterpillars - Lucky Dumpling (1995)

Moonpools & Caterpillars was a Filipino American rock band based in California. The band was most popular in the 1990s. They released three albums commercially, The Pink Album (self-released), Lucky Dumpling (1995, Elektra Records), and 12 Songs (self-released). Lucky Dumpling was produced by Richard Gottehrer, who has also worked with Blondie, The Go-Go's, and Judybats. Moonpools & Caterpillars was based in Los Angeles and played many nights at the Whiskey-A-Gogo, where The Pink Album was recorded live. Lead singer Kimi Ward Encarnacion is known for being very energetic on stage. Jay Jay Encarnacion gave Moonpools & Caterpillars their distinct guitar sounds, which varied from ethereal chorusing to large, wall-of-sound distortion. Bassist Tim DePala and drummer Gugut Salgado were the other two members of the band.

The band was featured in the movies The Baby-Sitters Club (1995) and Wish Upon a Star (1996).

Biography

The Glendale-based Moonpools and Caterpillars were one of the most successful bands of Philippine ancestry and released their only major-label album, Lucky Dumpling, in 1995 through Eastwest/Elektra. The strong debut was produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's, Judybats, and Jeffrey Gaines) and Jeffrey Lesser (Lou Reed, Barbra Streisand) at Bearsville Studios. Moonpools and Caterpillars were popular mainstays of the Los Angeles scene, especially on the Sunset Strip. Lead singer Kimi Ward Encarnacion had the voice and stage presence of Natalie Merchant, Bjork, and Gwen Stefani. JayJay Encarnacion brought an amazing combination of guitar sounds to the group and was influenced by U2's the Edge, 10,000 Maniacs' Robert Buck, and the Smiths' Johnny Marr. Bassist Tim DePala and drummer Gugut Salgado made up a dynamic rhythm section. Moonpools and Caterpillars have accurately been compared to Belly, the Cocteau Twins, Edna Swap, Alanis Morisette, the Cranberries, Velocity Girl, Tuscadero, Blake Babies, the Darling Buds, Liz Phair, and Veruca Salt. In spite of album sales that disappointed Elektra, Lucky Dumpling was a critical success and Volkswagon licensed multiple songs for the Jetta debut ad campaign (especially "Hear"). The band's song "Summertime" also was used in Disney's Baby-Sitters Club. Moonpools released The Pink Album in 1995 through Nobu Records. A third disc simply called Twelve Songs was for sale the night the group disbanded in 1998. Moonpools and Caterpillars were a phenomenal band that was vastly underappreciated. In a fair, just world where good taste reigned, Moonspools & Caterpillars would be household names.

Eddie Brickell & The New Bohemians - Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars (1988)

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians is an alternative rock jam band that originated in Texas in the mid-1980s. The band is best known for their 1988 hit "What I Am" from the album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. Their music contains elements of rock, folk, blues, and jazz. Following the release of their 1990 second album Ghost of a Dog, lead singer Edie Brickell married singer-songwriter Paul Simon after leaving the band. In 2006 they launched a new web site and released a new album Stranger Things. Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, released in 1988. The album went 2x platinum in the United States.

The B-52's - Nude On The Moon (2002)

Nude on the Moon: The B-52's Anthology is a two-CD compilation album containing 35 songs recorded by The B-52's between the years 1979 and 1998. This compilation includes live recordings of "Quiche Lorraine" and "Whammy Kiss", and a previously unreleased outtake version of "Queen of Las Vegas. The B-52's were one of the great new wave bands, one of the ones who defined the style and cut one of the great records of their time (their eponymous debut), an outfit who maintained a dedicated following even as they fell off the radar of critics and hipsters, a group who overcame a tragic loss (guitarist Ricky Wilson) to make a startling, unpredictable comeback that launched them beyond college radio and to the top of the pop charts. It's a hell of a story, even if the final act was decidedly anticlimatic (after one follow-up to the Cosmic Thing comeback, 1992's Good Stuff, the group essentially disappeared apart from an embarrassing version of the Flintstones theme for the 1993 big-screen adaptation), and they're easily one of the more legendary bands of their time. Unfortunately, legend doesn't always translate to great music, and the fact of the matter is that the B-52's really only had two very good records: the transcendent debut and the comeback. The second record had its share of moments, more than the other albums that followed, and there were some sublime cuts scattered among the other records, but by and large they were a band who got by on their brilliant moments — brilliant moments that were surrounded by competence and mediocrity. It really was the kind of career that could be salvaged and justified by a tremendous double-disc retrospective like Nude on the Moon: The B-52's Anthology, which has a lot of their greatest moments as well as interviews in the comprehensive booklet, great photos, and just the general warm vibe this Georgian band — perhaps the greatest Georgian musical act this side of Jerry Reed or R.E.M. — gives off.

Red Flag - Naive Art [Special Edition] (2001)

The Liverpool duo Red Flag (brothers Chris and Mark Reynolds) released their debut album, Naïve Art, in 1989. Red Flag, like other late-'80s/early-'90s bands such as Camouflage and Cause & Effect, offer a similar mix of gloomy, synthesizer-driven dance-pop made popular by synth rock kings Depeche Mode. Derivative yet melodic, Naïve Art is a decent debut, though it eventually runs out of steam. Red Flag's obvious debt to Depeche Mode is immediately apparent in the minor club hits "If I Ever" and "Russian Radio." Though the production is a bit rough around the edges, the combination of cold synth beats and the emotionless vocal approach (similar to Depeche's Martin Gore) makes perfect dancefloor fodder for the disaffected goth pop club crowd. Like Depeche Mode's best work, what makes Naïve Art bearable is Red Flag's obvious gift of songcraft. Both "If I Ever" and "Russian Radio" are comparable to some of Depeche's best work, and although much of Naïve Art sounds the same after a while, the album flows along quite nicely. Those who criticize Depeche Mode for being pretentious and "wimpy" certainly won't find any redeeming qualities in Red Flag, but Naïve Art should satisfy fans of the genre.

Translator - Everywhere That I'm Not - A Retrospective (1986)

Everywhere That I'm Not: A Retrospective was a greatest hits album released by San Francisco new wave group Translator in 1986. But again, there is always something missing with this compilation - "Come WIth Me" is not included. Everywhere That We Were: The Best of Translator which was released on 1996 is the probably the Best Compilation of Translator and I've been googoling on this album and can't find any download links. I might buy the record instead.

Translator then relocated to San Francisco where they were signed to Howie Klein's independent label, 415 Records, on the strength of the demo tape they sent to college radio station KUSF: the loose and rambling yet laconic "Everywhere That I'm Not" has remained the band's signature tune. The song was featured on Translator's debut album Heartbeats And Triggers, which was recorded with the widely respected producer David Kahne. As a result of 415 Records' national distribution arrangement with Columbia Records the debut album received strong promotion and became an underground and College radio hit in 1982. “I remember being on our first tour when we were playing at the Ritz (in New York) and thinking no one was gonna come,” recalled Barton. “And I remember coming around the corner and seeing this line going out the door and down the block and it was like ‘Oh my God...we sold the place out!’

Between 1983 and 1986 the band completed 3 more albums for the same label. They received some airplay for "Un-Alone", from the second album No Time Like Now (1983), once again produced by Kahne. The self-titled third album Translator (1985) contained fan-favorites "Gravity" and "O Lazarus". The fourth Evening of The Harvest (1986) featured "Standing In Line" and "Stony Gates of Time." For the third and fourth albums Translator worked with another top New Wave producer, Ed Stasium. Though the later albums contained consistently strong original songs none got as much recognition as the debut.

Translator's music continued to have underground appeal and was featured on at least 3 different compilation albums during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2007 all four original albums were re-issued on CD by Wounded Bird Records with previously released bonus tracks. This series made their entire 1980s work on CD for the first time. In May 2008 the 2 CD collection Different Time was released. It contains previously unavailable demos, studio out-takes and live recordings spanning 1979 to 1986, with one track from 1996.

In 1996, ten years after their official breakup, the band was paid its highest compliment when Beatles fans mistook their take of the instrumental "Cry for a Shadow" for a new recording by the Fab Four from the Anthology sessions (in fact it was a Translator B-side from 1983.)

Translator continues to reunite on occasion, including the South By Southwest festival in Austin in 2006, and shows in Los Angeles and a sold out date at Slim's in San Francisco in September 2009. The band is still releasing music, including a planned record of previously unreleased fully produced songs from 1993. Barton works as a solo recording artist. His brand new 2011 album is titled "Projector". It was produced by Marvin Etzioni from Lone Justice and was recorded on 2" reel-to-reel tape. Steve plays all the instruments on this one. The album is made up of songs written in the aftermath of Steve's dad's passing in 2009. In 2010 he released a 20-song CD titled "Gallery" featuring tracks from his three solo albums, plus four brand new songs with his solo band, Steve Barton And The Oblivion Click (Steve Barton, Robbie Rist, Derrick Anderson). Scheff has continued drumming, most recently with the orchestra at Teatro ZinZanni, on a 2008 summer UK tour with Dead Kennedys and, with Larry Dekker, guitarist Peter Wiley and keyboardist and singer Cynthia Haagens in Bang Bang Men. Robert Darlington published a collection of his poetry titled "Ether". Larry Dekker continues to supply his powerful melodic bass playing for various bands.

Translator is a San Francisco rock band that had success during the 1980s. They created a sound that spanned updated British Merseybeat and stripped-down punk-like rock to psychedelia. Guadalcanal Diary - Flip-Flop (1989)

Guadalcanal Diary is an alternative jangle pop group from Marietta, Georgia. The band formed in 1981 (originally as "Emergency Broadcast System") and disbanded in 1989. They reformed in 1997 and toured without a new album. The band originated in Marietta, a suburb of Atlanta, but they were often billed as being "from Athens, Georgia" in the early 1980s.

The group's music was characterized by clear, bright guitar sounds, upbeat rhythms, and Murray Attaway's clear, high tenor. Lyrically, the band mixed absurd, punk humor ("I Wish I Killed John Wayne," "I See Moe," "Watusi Rodeo," "Cattle Prod") with melancholy and spiritual themes ("Lewa Wechi," "Always Saturday," "3:00 AM," "Litany"). In liner notes for a Rhino Handmade re-release of Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man, Attaway described the group's sound.

Always Saturday is the standout single from this album which can be found also on The Best Of New Music Album, also heard on 89.1 DMZ on Sunday's Wave180.
